Bannerman Castle

Castle · Beacon, New York

The ruined Scottish-style arsenal on POLLEPEL ISLAND in the Hudson, built from 1901 by FRANCIS BANNERMAN VI — a military surplus dealer who bought so much government ordnance that New York City made him move it off the mainland. ⚠ HE BUILT A CASTLE TO STORE IT IN, with his own name in enormous letters on the wall, and it has been a spectacular ruin since a 1969 fire and a 1920 powder explosion.
