Barachois Pond Provincial Park

A Forest And Pond Park In Western Newfoundland With A Sandy Beach On The Pond, A Campground, A Erin Mountain Hike And Views Of The Lewis Hills. A Summer Stop On The Trans Canada Highway, With Moose And Trout Fishing · Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador

Barachois Pond Provincial Park lies beside the Trans-Canada Highway in western Newfoundland, on the Bay St. George side of the island, a short drive from Stephenville and about an hour from Corner Brook (confirm the distances). A barachois is a pond cut off from the sea by a sand bar, and the park wraps a forested shore around such a pond, with a sandy beach, a campground and a network of forest trails. The most rewarding hike climbs Erin Mountain for views toward the Lewis Hills, the highest ground on the island, and the barrens beyond. Moose are common in the woods and brook trout live in the nearby waters. The park is a natural stopping point for drivers crossing the island, yet it is also a destination in its own right for camping, swimming and walking, with cool summers and short, bright autumns. Fuel, groceries and cafes are available in Stephenville, so campers can restock easily between hikes and beach days.

The park is open as a seasonal provincial park, normally from about mid May or June to early September or October, with the campground, gatehouse, beach facilities and interpretive displays running on a set calendar, so confirm opening and closing dates with Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Parks before you go. Trails may be walkable outside the season, but the road and services can be closed. Day-use hours generally follow daylight, and the campground office keeps limited hours. Late spring melt, summer fog and early snow can all shorten the usable season, so call ahead for travel in May and late September.
