Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains
UNESCO World Heritage Site (2018): The Oldest Well Preserved Volcanic And Sedimentary Rock On Earth, About 3.6 Billion Years Old, Holding Some Of The Earliest Evidence Of Life On The Planet Read From A Signposted Geotrail Over A Mountain Pass, With The 1884 Gold Rush Town Of Barberton And Its Boomtown Buildings At The Foot Of It · Barberton, Mpumalanga
The rock in these mountains on the Eswatini border is about three and a half billion years old, which makes it the oldest well-preserved volcanic and sedimentary sequence known on earth - old enough that it formed when the planet was still assembling itself, and well enough preserved that geologists come here from everywhere to read it. It holds some of the earliest physical evidence of life anywhere. UNESCO inscribed it in 2018, and what exists for a visitor is the Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail: a signposted public road over the Bulembu pass with numbered stopping points where you get out, read a panel and look at a cliff that is older than almost anything else you will ever see. It is not a hike and there is no crater, cave or ruin - it is rock, and the row is honest that this appeals to some people enormously and to others not at all. The 1884 gold-rush town of Barberton sits at the bottom with its boomtown buildings intact.
On the Eswatini border south-east of Nelspruit, with the geotrail running from Barberton over Bulembu pass, Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa
THE GEOTRAIL IS A PUBLIC ROAD, so it has no hours and no gate - you drive the R40 south from Barberton towards the Bulembu border post, stopping at numbered interpretive points along the pass. The road is TARRED ON THE BARBERTON SIDE AND GRAVEL HIGHER UP towards Eswatini, and the gravel sections need care and reasonable clearance in wet weather. Barberton's visitor centre, the Belhaven and Stopforth house museums and the old stock exchange keep daylight hours and WHETHER EACH IS STAFFED VARIES, so ask in town. Crossing into Eswatini at Bulembu needs a passport and the post has limited hours, so do not plan a loop through it casually. Barberton is 45 km south of Nelspruit on good tar, which puts it about four hours from Johannesburg, and the area is in the LOWVELD MALARIA ZONE at its lower edge.
