Bari
Historic Centre Of Bari, With The Basilica Di San Nicola Of 1087 Holding The Relics Of Saint Nicholas And Serving Both Catholic And Orthodox Pilgrimage · Bari, Puglia
Puglia's capital and the port everyone uses without stopping, which is a mistake now and was a fair one twenty years ago. The old town is a dense white maze on a promontory between two harbours, and at the heart of it is the basilica of San Nicola, built from 1087 to hold the bones of Saint Nicholas after sailors from Bari stole them from Myra in what is now Turkey. The relics are still in the crypt, the crypt has an Orthodox altar in it as well as a Catholic one, and Russian and Greek pilgrims come in numbers, which makes this one of very few churches in Europe where both communions worship over the same tomb. Outside, the women of Strada Arco Basso make orecchiette on tables in the street and sell them by the bag. Bari Vecchia was genuinely rough within living memory and has been turned around; it is now the best evening in the region, and the best base in Puglia for anyone travelling without a car.
