Bariloche and Nahuel Huapi Lake

Gateway Town To Nahuel Huapi National Park, The Oldest National Park In Argentina (Created As Such In 1934 From A 1903 Land Donation). The Town Was Founded In 1902 · San Carlos de Bariloche, Rio Negro

Bariloche is the capital of the Argentine lake district, a town of stone and timber buildings built in an Alpine style on the southern shore of Nahuel Huapi, a deep glacial lake more than five hundred square kilometres across with forested mountains and snow peaks all round it. It sits inside the country's oldest national park, and the combination of lakes, forest, beaches and peaks has made it Argentina's all-year resort: skiing on Cerro Catedral in winter, and in summer hiking to mountain refuges, kayaking, fly fishing and swimming in very cold water. The Circuito Chico loop past the Llao Llao hotel and the chairlift up Cerro Campanario give the views the town is known for. The centre itself is busy, commercial and full of chocolate shops, and in July and in spring it fills with Argentine school-leavers on their graduation trips. Most visitors base themselves out along the lakeshore instead and use the town for supplies. It is also the start of the Seven Lakes Route north.

The lake, viewpoints and trails are open at all times. Chairlifts and cable cars run in daylight and stop in high wind. Lake excursions run all year on a reduced winter schedule. Cerro Catedral's ski season runs roughly from late June to late September, depending on snow.
