Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park

A Shady National Park (1938) Inside The Town Of Uruapan Around The Rodilla Del Diablo, The Spring Source Of The Cupatitzio River, With Stone Paths, Bridges, Waterfalls And A Trout Farm, Set Among Avocado Orchards. A Cool Walk Of An Hour Or Two, Easy To Reach From The City Centre · Uruapan, Michoacán

Barranca del Cupatitzio is a small, shady national park inside the city of Uruapan, in Michoacan, built around the Rodilla del Diablo (the Devil's Knee), the spring where the Cupatitzio river wells up from the rock. From there stone paths, bridges, steps and railings follow the clear stream downhill past waterfalls, fountains, moss-covered rocks and tall trees, with a trout farm along the way. It is a cool, green walk of one to two hours, easy to reach from the city centre, and pleasant for families, older visitors and anyone who wants a quiet break in a town known as the avocado capital of Mexico. The park is not wilderness. It is a tended garden park with vendors, benches, a small craft area and wet paths. It is worth a morning if you are in Uruapan, and not worth a special trip from far away. The Paricutin volcano is only nearby, not in the park, and needs its own half-day. As elsewhere in Michoacan, check current state travel advice before you plan the trip.

The park is normally open daily, from morning until late afternoon, and often opens earlier on weekends and holidays. Exact times change, so confirm locally. There is an entry fee at the main gate, so it is not FREE, although walking the streets around the park and the nearby plaza costs nothing. Some side paths, bridges or lower sections can be CLOSED after storms or when stones are too slick, and the trout farm and craft stalls keep their own hours. The rainy season from June to October brings daily showers, usually in the afternoon, so mornings are the best window. Weekends and Mexican holidays are busy; weekday mornings are calmer.
