Basilica Cistern
Within The UNESCO World Heritage Inscription Historic Areas Of Istanbul (1985); 6th Century Byzantine Cistern, Reopened After Restoration In 2022 · Istanbul, Istanbul
Justinian's engineers roofed a whole underground reservoir in 532 to hold water for the great palace above it, and to do it cheaply they used 336 second-hand columns dragged from older ruins around the empire - which is why no two are quite alike and why two of them stand on carved Medusa heads, one on her side and one upside down, with no surviving explanation for either. The cistern held around eighty thousand cubic metres of water and was still supplying Ottoman palaces when a French scholar rediscovered it after noticing locals pulling up fish through holes in their floors. It reopened in 2022 after years of restoration and the experience changed: raised walkways, theatrical lighting, contemporary sculpture standing in the water and evening opening at a higher price. It is cool, dark, wet underfoot and loud with dripping, and it is about twenty minutes end to end if you do not stop, and the queue outside is often longer.
