Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians

Minor Basilica · Hubertus, Wisconsin

A twin-spired neo-Romanesque church of 1926 standing on a kame — a steep conical hill of glacial gravel — about 1,350 feet above sea level in the Kettle Moraine north-west of Milwaukee, known universally as Holy Hill. It has been in the care of the Discalced Carmelites since 1906, and Pope Benedict XVI raised it to the rank of minor basilica in 2006. Around 300,000 people a year come, a mixture of pilgrims and visitors who have driven out for the view: 178 steps up the scenic tower give one of the widest prospects in southern Wisconsin, and in the third week of October it is spectacular.
