Battery Park City Esplanade
City Park · New York, New York
A mile and a half of landscaped waterfront promenade along the Hudson at the western edge of Lower Manhattan, ⚠ BUILT ENTIRELY ON LANDFILL MADE FROM WORLD TRADE CENTER EXCAVATION SPOIL. The rock and earth dug out for the Twin Towers' foundations in the 1960s was dumped into the river to make ninety-two acres of new Manhattan, and this promenade is its edge.
South End Avenue at the Hudson River, New York, New York, 10280, United States
FREE and open at all times — a mile and a half of public waterfront promenade with no gate. Rockefeller Park, the Irish Hunger Memorial and the public art are all free. ⚠ MANAGED BY THE BATTERY PARK CITY AUTHORITY, a New York State body rather than NYC Parks, which runs a substantial FREE PUBLIC PROGRAMME of fitness classes, nature events, kayaking and concerts that is almost unknown outside the neighbourhood — check bpca.ny.gov. ⚠ FULLY EXPOSED TO THE HUDSON with little shelter; the winter wind is severe. ⚠ IT IS NOT THE BATTERY, which is a different park ten minutes south.
