Battleship North Carolina

Specialty Museum · Wilmington, North Carolina

The lead ship of her class and the first of the American fast battleships, commissioned in April 1941 while the United States was still neutral, and the most decorated American battleship of the Second World War with fifteen battle stars. She sits across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington as a memorial to the North Carolinians who died in the war, saved from scrapping in 1961 by a statewide campaign that included schoolchildren sending in their pocket money.
