Bayburt Castle

A Hilltop Fortress Rebuilt By The Ottomans On Older Foundations, With Long Walls And Towers Above A Small City On The Coruh River, On The Old Silk Road To Persia. A Stop On The Road Between Trabzon And Erzurum, With Views Across The Valley · Bayburt, Bayburt

Bayburt Castle sits on a long rocky ridge above the small city of Bayburt, in north-eastern Turkiye, where the Coruh River winds through a high valley between Trabzon on the Black Sea and Erzurum on the plateau. The site was a fortress long before the Ottomans, and the surviving walls and towers, repaired in several periods, follow the crest for several hundred metres (confirm the layers). Bayburt lay on the old caravan route that carried silk and goods between the coast and Persia, and the castle watched over that traffic. The path up is short and the ridge top is open to the wind, with broad views over the river, the flat roofs of the old town and the surrounding hills. The city has a few Seljuk and Ottoman buildings, a handsome old bridge and a tradition of stone carving, and it makes a calm overnight stop on a long mountain drive. Winters are long and cold, and summer is the gentlest time. A visit takes one to two hours.

The ridge and its walls are normally open from about 08:00 until dusk, with no strict gate in summer, and any ticket booth or restoration fence may change that from year to year (confirm). The Bayburt Museum and other city monuments keep short museum hours, often 08:30 to 17:00, and may close one day a week. Cafes below the castle and in the town keep market hours, roughly 09:00 to 20:00, and many shut earlier in winter. Heavy snow, ice and fog can close the path for days between December and March, and wind on the crest can be too strong to stand in.
