The Bayezid II Complex stands on the bank of the Tunca river on the northern edge of Edirne, a short walk from the old centre and about 2 km from the Selimiye Mosque. Sultan Bayezid II ordered it built between about 1484 and 1488, and it brought together a mosque, a hospital, a medical school, a kitchen for the poor and a bath in one group of domed buildings beside a green park (confirm dates). The hospital cared for the sick and for people with mental illness, and records and later accounts describe treatment with music and the sound of running water. Today the complex is a museum of health, with displays of medical history, rooms of life size figures and recorded sounds that recreate the therapy (confirm). The domed halls, the quiet courtyard and the river meadow around them make a gentle visit that suits families and anyone curious about the history of medicine.
