A large forested state park in Allenstown, about 20 minutes from both Concord and Manchester, and one of the largest state parks in New Hampshire at roughly 10,000 acres (confirm). Much of what visitors use today was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, when young men from a camp inside the park cut roads and trails, built shelters and dammed brooks. The park now holds dozens of miles of trails through pine and hardwood forest, used by hikers, trail runners and above all mountain bikers, who come for some of the best-known singletrack in the state. Catamount Pond has a guarded summer beach and picnic grove, other ponds are open for paddling and fishing, and a campground sits beside Beaver Pond. The surviving CCC camp buildings house small museums, including a museum of the CCC itself and a snowmobile museum (confirm days). There is also an archery range (confirm). The park is busy on summer weekends at the beach and quiet on the trails most of the year; hunting is allowed in season, so wear blaze orange in the autumn.
