Bear Butte State Park
Subnational Park · Sturgis, South Dakota
A laccolith standing alone above the northern plains, and one of the most important sacred sites of the Northern Plains tribes - Matȟó Pahá to the Lakota, Noahȧ-vose to the Cheyenne, who received their sacred arrows and their law here. It became a state park in 1961, but it was and remains a place of pilgrimage, fasting and prayer. Visitors are welcome on the trail. They are guests at somebody's church.
