Beartooth Highway

All American Road · Red Lodge, Montana

Sixty-eight miles of US 212 from Red Lodge to Cooke City, climbing in switchbacks to the Beartooth Pass at 10,947 feet and running for miles across an alpine plateau above the tree line — snowfields in August, tarns, and the Beartooth and Absaroka ranges in every direction. Charles Kuralt called it the most beautiful drive in America and the description has stuck for fifty years. It is open roughly from late May to mid-October and it can snow on it in any of those months.
