Beauvoir
National Historic Landmark · Biloxi, Mississippi
An 1852 raised cottage on the Biloxi beachfront where Jefferson Davis spent the last twelve years of his life and wrote The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. From 1903 to 1957 the estate was a home for Confederate veterans and their widows, and the cemetery on the grounds holds several hundred of them along with a Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the outbuildings and took the house down to its frame in 2005; it reopened in 2008 after a restoration. It is a National Historic Landmark, and it is owned and interpreted by the Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
