Beaver Bridge
A 1949 Single Lane Suspension Bridge Carrying Highway 187 Over The White River Arm Of Beaver Lake One Of The Last Suspension Bridges Of Its Kind Still Carrying Public Traffic In The United States. Listed On The National Register Of Historic Places. · Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Locals call it the Little Golden Gate, which is generous, but the Beaver Bridge is a genuine 1949 suspension bridge with towers, cables and a timber deck, and it still carries the public road over the White River arm of Beaver Lake. It is a single lane. Traffic takes turns, the deck rumbles, there is a weight limit, and drivers who have never crossed a suspension bridge one car at a time tend to remember it. It is on the National Register and it is one of very few bridges of the type left in service in the country. The hamlet of Beaver sits at one end and the water is popular with anglers at both.
Highway 187 at Beaver, over the White River arm of Beaver Lake, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, United States
A public road bridge, open at all hours, free, with no facilities. It is single-lane with a posted weight limit and traffic alternates by courtesy rather than by signal. Small pull-offs at either end give parking for a photograph. The bridge has been closed for maintenance periods in the past, which for a structure of this age is likely to recur - check before relying on it as a through route.
