Beaver Island

Island · Beaver Island, Michigan

Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan, a quiet place reached by ferry from Charlevoix in about two hours, or by a small air service from the same town. The ferry runs a seasonal schedule with reduced winter service, so confirm times before you plan. The island is known as America's Emerald Isle for its Irish-American heritage, and in the 1850s it was the base of James Strang, a Mormon leader who crowned himself king and was assassinated in 1856. St. James is the harbour village, with the shops, food and ferry dock. Beyond it are gravel roads, quiet beaches, inland lakes and several lighthouses, good for biking, kayaking and dark-sky stargazing. Services and lodging are limited and there are no big hotels, so book ahead. The summer season runs roughly May to September. It is a slow, simple island, and the crossing alone makes it a poor day-trip choice, so plan to stay at least two nights and carry what you need.

Beaver Island, Beaver Island, Michigan, 49782, United States

Beaver Island has no single opening time. The ferry from Charlevoix runs a seasonal schedule, with more crossings in summer and reduced service in winter, and the small air service flies year-round weather permitting - confirm both before you travel. Most island businesses, restaurants and rentals keep summer hours, roughly May to September, and many close or cut back in spring, autumn and winter. The Beaver Island Historical Society museums have seasonal hours, so confirm them before you plan around a visit. Beaches, roads and lighthouse viewpoints are outdoors and reachable in daylight, but weather and ferry cancellations can change plans.
