Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine

Specialty Museum · Beckley, West Virginia

A worked-out low-seam mine under a Beckley city park, opened to visitors in 1962, where a battery-powered man trip carries you around 1,500 feet underground through the original passages. The guides are retired coal miners describing the work they did themselves, which is the whole point and is not reproducible anywhere else. A restored coal camp stands on the surface above it.

Ewart Avenue, Beckley, West Virginia, 25801, United States

Open roughly April through early November, daytime hours, with underground tours leaving on a rotation through the day — the last departure is well before closing. CLOSED FOR THE WINTER. Ticketed; one admission covers the mine, the coal camp and the youth museum.
