Beijicun (Arctic Village)

The Northernmost Settlement In China, On The Heilongjiang River In Mohe; A White Night And Extreme Cold Destination With Very Dark Skies And Occasional Aurora · Mohe, Heilongjiang

Beijicun sits on the Heilongjiang river at about fifty-three and a half degrees north, looking across the water at Russia, and it is the northernmost settlement in China - which the village has turned into an entire industry of superlatives, with the northernmost post office, the northernmost house and a stone marking the northernmost point where visitors queue to be photographed. Two things genuinely distinguish it. Around the summer solstice the nights barely darken, a phenomenon the town markets as white nights and celebrates with a festival, and the sun sets late and rises absurdly early. And in winter this is the coldest inhabited place in the country, where forty below is an ordinary January reading and the national record of minus fifty-two was set nearby. The aurora is the third thing people come for, and here the honest answer matters: it is possible, it is celebrated, and it is rare. This is not Tromso.

Beijicun, Mohe, Daxing'anling, Mohe, Heilongjiang, China

The village is a lived-in settlement and its streets are open at all hours; the Beijicun scenic area charges a modest ticket with a gate keeping daytime hours. NIGHT VIEWING IS INFORMAL - there is no observatory and no aurora alert service, and people simply watch from the riverbank or outside their guesthouse. TWO SEASONS, TWO TRIPS: late June for the white-night festival, when the sky barely darkens, and December to February for extreme cold, dark skies and the best aurora odds. WINTER TEMPERATURES BELOW -40C ARE ROUTINE and limit outdoor time to short spells.
