Bejaia (Historically Bougie) Was The Hammadid Dynasty'S Second Capital After Al Qal'A Of Beni Hammad; Gouraya National Park On The Headland Above The Port Protects A Resident Troop Of Endangered Barbary Macaques And Sea Cliffs Running Out To The Cap Carbon Lighthouse · Bejaia, Bejaia

Bejaia, known historically as Bougie, was the Hammadid dynasty's second capital after Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad fell, and the Mediterranean port it grew into still works beneath Mount Gouraya, a limestone headland that has been a national park since 1984. The park's sea cliffs run out to the Cap Carbon lighthouse, and its forested slopes hold a resident troop of Barbary macaques, an endangered species found only in this part of North Africa - genuinely rare animals in genuinely wild surroundings rather than a zoo enclosure. Below the headland, Bejaia's old quarter keeps fragments of Hammadid-era fortification among later Spanish and French layers, and the harbour itself, still a working commercial port, gives the city a grounded, unpolished character that sets it apart from a purely tourist-facing town. The combination of a historically important port and a genuine wildlife superlative on the hill directly above it is what earns Bejaia its place here rather than the city alone.

Bejaia's old quarter and harbour can be walked at any daylight hour. Gouraya National Park's trails are open through the day with no fixed gate hours in the way a ticketed museum keeps one, though a ranger station near the main trailhead can advise on current conditions and where the macaque troop has recently been seen. The Cap Carbon lighthouse road and viewpoint are reached by a mix of driving and a final walk; confirm the current access arrangement locally, since lighthouse grounds in Algeria are not always open to visitors beyond the approach viewpoint. Bejaia has its own airport and is linked to Algiers and Setif by road.
