Belgrad Forest

A Forest On The Northern Edge Of Istanbul With Walking And Running Trails, Picnic Grounds, Byzantine Era Reservoirs And Ottoman Aqueducts And Dams, And A Legacy As The City'S Water Source. A Fresh And Shady Escape For Istanbul Families, With A Quiet Mid Week · Sariyer, Istanbul

Belgrad Forest is a large oak, beech and hornbeam woodland on the northern edge of Istanbul, roughly 25 km from the city centre in the Sariyer district, covering several thousand hectares (confirm). For centuries it was the main source of the water of the city, and its Ottoman dams, reservoirs and long stone aqueducts, some attributed to the architect Sinan, still stand among the trees (confirm). Today it is a green escape with marked walking and running loops, picnic grounds with tables, an arboretum and quiet forest villages. Istanbul families arrive at weekends for tea and barbecue areas, while mid-week the trails are almost empty. Paths are mostly earth and gravel, and bikes and joggers share the main tracks. In summer the forest is cooler than the city, and in autumn the leaves turn gold and copper. Fire bans apply in dry months, and picnic rules are enforced by forest guards, so check conditions before you go (confirm).

The forest is an open landscape with several entry gates, and the main picnic grounds and arboretum normally operate from early to dusk, roughly 08:00 to 18:00 or later in summer, with some sections closed in winter or during fire danger (confirm). Barbecue areas and tea gardens follow seasonal hours, mostly open from April to October. Weekends, spring holidays and national holidays are busy, while weekdays are calm. Confirm gate hours, any fire ban and the arboretum ticket office locally before travelling.
