Bell's Brewery Eccentric Cafe

Brewery · Kalamazoo, Michigan

The Eccentric Cafe is the original brewpub of Bell's Brewery in downtown Kalamazoo, the craft brewer Larry Bell started in 1985 as the Kalamazoo Brewing Company. It is a rambling set of bar rooms, a kitchen, a stage and a beer garden on the brewery campus, and it is where Two Hearted Ale, the IPA named for the Two Hearted River in the Upper Peninsula, and Oberon, the spring wheat ale with a cult following, found their first drinkers. It suits beer fans, groups who want a long lunch with live music, and anyone passing through Kalamazoo who wants one proper Michigan brewery stop. It is honest to say that you come for the room and the pours, not for a museum: this is a working pub, loud and full on weekends. You must be 21 to drink. Allow two hours, more for a show. The big production brewery is a separate site, so confirm what tours exist before you plan around one. Come hungry and with a driver who is not drinking.

The Eccentric Cafe is normally open daily for lunch and dinner and later on weekends, with the beer garden running in warmer months and weather. Exact opening and closing times, kitchen hours and the days with live music change by season, so confirm on the day or check the brewery's calendar before a special trip. Weekend evenings and event nights are the busiest, and wait times can build for a table. Brewery tours, where they run, are scheduled separately and may not start at the cafe, so confirm availability and booking. The cafe is closed on a few holidays, and winter hours can be shorter than summer.
