Delaware State Park On The Former Estate Of William Du Pont Jr. In North Wilmington, With His Remodeled Bellevue Hall Mansion, A Tennis Center, Horse Barns And An Old Exercise Track · Wilmington, Delaware

Bellevue State Park is a former du Pont estate in the suburbs of north Wilmington, between Philadelphia Pike and I-495, a few minutes from the Delaware River. It belonged to William du Pont Jr., a sportsman who bred and raced horses, designed racetracks and loved tennis, and after his death in the mid-1960s the state turned the grounds into a park. His house, Bellevue Hall, began as a Victorian mansion and was remodeled in the 1930s into the white-columned Greek Revival building that stands today; it is used mainly for weddings and events rather than tours. The rest of the estate still reads as a sporting place: a tennis center with indoor and outdoor courts, an equestrian center and horse barns, and the old horse exercise track, now a walking loop that local people circle every morning. There is a fishing pond, a community garden, woods with trail links to the Northern Delaware Greenway, and summer evening concerts on the lawn. It is a busy neighborhood park more than a destination, and pleasant for an hour or two.

The park grounds are open every day, generally from about 8 AM to sunset; confirm current hours. A per-vehicle entry fee is normally charged during the state park fee season, roughly March through November, and it is higher for cars with out-of-state plates; outside that season entry has usually been free, and people arriving on foot or by bicycle along the greenway have generally not paid - confirm amounts and dates. The tennis center, the equestrian center and Bellevue Hall keep their own schedules: courts are booked by reservation or membership, the barns are working stables rather than a public exhibit, and the mansion is generally not open for public tours and is often closed for private weddings and events. Summer concerts have run on a weekday evening (historically Thursdays) through the warm months, with their own dates and rules - confirm the season's schedule. Parts of the grounds near the hall can be closed during events, and the lots fill on concert nights.
