Bellingrath Gardens and Home
Formal Garden · Theodore, Alabama
Sixty-five acres of garden on the Fowl River south of Mobile, laid out from the 1920s by Walter and Bessie Bellingrath on a fishing camp bought with one of the first Coca-Cola bottling fortunes in the South. Bessie planted it and Walter opened it to the public in 1932 after so many people asked to see the azaleas. The 1935 house at its centre is shown as the family left it, and the garden is planted to have something in flower in every month of the year, which is the whole design principle.
