Ben & Jerry's Factory
Specialty Museum · Waterbury, Vermont
The ice cream factory at Waterbury, opened in 1985 and running public tours since 1986 - and the only Ben & Jerry's facility anywhere in the world that is open to the public. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield started the company on 5 May 1978 in a renovated petrol station in downtown Burlington after a five-dollar correspondence course, and this plant now turns out three hundred and fifty thousand pints a day. The tour is short, the samples are the point, and on the hillside outside there is a graveyard of headstones for flavours that did not make it.

⚠ CHECK CURRENT HOURS, TOUR TIMES AND PRICES DIRECTLY WITH THE COMPANY - the website returns 403 to automated checks, so none of those are recorded here. Tours are GUIDED ONLY, run at intervals through the day, last about half an hour including the film and a sample, and are ticketed; they have at times used timed entry and they fill on summer afternoons. ⚠ THE PRODUCTION LINE RUNS TO A MANUFACTURING SCHEDULE RATHER THAN A VISITOR ONE - weekdays are far more likely to have ice cream moving, and a weekend tour often looks at a stopped line. THE FLAVOR GRAVEYARD, THE GROUNDS, THE PICNIC AREA AND THE SCOOP SHOP ARE FREE AND NEED NO TOUR TICKET. Parking is free. This is the only Ben & Jerry's facility in the world open to the public.
