Ben Tre Coconut Delta
The Land Of Coconuts: Canals Lined With Nipa Palms, Candy Workshops, Orchards, Small Boat Trips And Homestays On The Mekong Delta. A Common Half Day Or Overnight Tour From Ho Chi Minh City, Packaged Heavily, And Best On An Overnight Stay Rather Than A Tourist Boat · Ben Tre, Ben Tre
Ben Tre is the coconut province of the Mekong Delta, about 90 km south-west of Ho Chi Minh City, a land of islands cut by canals and covered in coconut palms. Locals call it the land of coconuts, and the economy shows it: candy workshops boil coconut milk and sugar, others press oil, weave fibre or carve shells. Most visitors meet it on a packaged Mekong day tour from Saigon, which means a rushed boat ride, a candy workshop, a fruit tasting and a lunch, with a lot of time on a coach. The better way is overnight: a homestay in an orchard, a sampan along narrow canals, a bicycle ride past fruit trees and the quiet islands of Con Phung and Con Tau. It suits slow travellers, families and anyone who wants the delta without the crowds. It is worth the detour with a night. It is not worth a rushed day, because the best parts are early morning and evening, and a coach tour is gone by then. Pick your homestay with care.

Workshops, orchards and homestays work in daytime, commonly from early morning to late afternoon, and most tours stop by dusk. Villages and canal paths are FREE to walk or cycle at any hour. Small workshops may be CLOSED on Tet and rainy days, and boat trips often stop when the tide is low. Markets start before dawn and finish by mid-morning. Entry to orchards is by small fee or included in a tour, and homestay meals usually need notice. Confirm times with your host or hotel.
