Benagil Cave and the Algarve Cliffs
Sea Cave With A Collapsed Roof (The Algar) On The Algarve'S Limestone Coast, With The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail Along The Clifftops · Benagil, Faro
Benagil Cave (the Algar de Benagil) is a sea cave in the golden limestone cliffs of the central Algarve, where the sea has hollowed out a domed chamber with a round hole in its roof. Sunlight falls through that hole onto a small beach inside, and the picture has become one of the most shared images of Portugal. It sits on a stretch of coast between Carvoeiro and Armacao de Pera that is worth the trip on its own: stacks, arches, hidden coves and the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail along the clifftops, with Praia da Marinha, one of the most photographed beaches in the country, at its western end. People come for the boat trip into the cave, the clifftop walk and the beaches. The honest caveat is that the cave is now tightly regulated: since August 2024 only licensed boats and guided kayak or paddleboard tours may go in, for a few minutes each, swimming in is banned and nobody may land on the beach inside. You see it from the water or look down through the roof from the trail - you do not stand on that sand. In August the little village of Benagil is jammed with boats, cars and people.
Praia de Benagil, Lagoa municipality, Algarve - the sea cave and the cliff coast between Carvoeiro and Armacao de Pera, Benagil, Faro, Portugal
The cliffs, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail and the beaches are open all year and free; the clifftop view down through the cave roof is free at any hour of daylight. Boat and guided kayak tours run roughly from March or April to October, most often from mid-morning to late afternoon, and only when the sea allows - swell and wind cancel them, sometimes on the morning itself. Benagil is about 45-60 minutes by car from Faro airport; there is no useful train, and buses are sparse. Book a licensed boat or guided kayak tour ahead in July and August, and arrive before about 09:30 if you want a parking space in Benagil.
