Benbow State Recreation Area
State Park · Garberville, California
Benbow State Recreation Area sits beside Highway 101 near Garberville in southern Humboldt County, on the South Fork of the Eel River. It is a sunny, open river valley rather than a dark redwood grove, with a developed campground, river beaches and a seasonal lake area - confirm whether the lake still forms, because the dam is gone. Next door stands the Benbow Inn, a historic Tudor-style inn dating from 1926, a private business and separate from the park. Summers inland are hot and dry, and winters are wet, with steelhead running in the river in the cool months - confirm. Richardson Grove State Park, with big redwoods, is a few miles north and a separate place. Benbow suits campers, river loungers and anyone breaking up a drive on 101. It is a relaxed, family-friendly stop rather than a wilderness park: expect traffic noise, shallow water, warm afternoons and easy walking, and book camping early for summer weekends. Plan on a half day for the river, or a night or two if you camp.

Day use runs sunrise to sunset, and the campground runs on its own check-in and check-out times with reservations normally made ahead through the State Parks system - confirm both. The day-use fee is around 8 dollars a vehicle; confirm the current rate. The park is open in all seasons, but winter flooding can close riverside areas, and in summer low water and algae can limit swimming. Fire restrictions may cover stoves and campfires in dry months. Highway 101 noise carries into parts of the campground at all hours. Check the State Parks page and river notices on the day you go.
