Benefit Street and College Hill
National Historic Landmark District · Providence, Rhode Island
The hill on the east bank of the Providence River, made a National Historic Landmark district in 1970, carrying one of the densest surviving concentrations of colonial and early-republic architecture in America. Benefit Street runs along its face for about a mile of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses, and Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Providence Athenaeum and the Moses Brown and Wheeler schools all sit on the slope above it. It is the half of Rhode Island that is not Newport, and it is a working city neighbourhood rather than a preserved one.
Benefit Street, Providence, Rhode Island, 02906, United States
FREE and open at all times — it is a public street in a working city neighbourhood, with no ticket, no gate and no season. Individual institutions on the hill keep their own hours: the Providence Athenaeum is free to enter and keeps limited days, and the RISD Museum charges roughly $15-$20 with free days offered, so check before paying. ⚠ PARKING IS THE PRACTICAL CONSTRAINT — College Hill is metered and residential-permit throughout and enforcement is strict; park downtown and walk over one of the pedestrian bridges. The hill is steep and the brick and slate pavements are slippery in rain and ice.
