Beng Mealea
A Large 12th Century Temple Left Largely As It Was Found, Collapsed Galleries And Towers Wrapped In Jungle, With Wooden Walkways Laid Over The Rubble. Cut Off From The Main Angkor Ticket, It Has A Separate Fee. Quieter Than Ta Prohm, And The Mood Is The Draw, Not The Carving · Siem Reap, Siem Reap
Beng Mealea is a large 12th-century temple that has been left much as it was found: towers and galleries have collapsed into heaps of sandstone, and trees and roots bind the ruin in a green tangle. It was built in the same era as Angkor Wat and shares its general plan, but nobody has rebuilt it, so the mood is of an abandoned place and not of a restored monument. Wooden walkways and raised paths now lead across the worst of the rubble, and informal routes over blocks let you climb through the middle. Its remoteness is the point: it lies about 65 km from Siem Reap on the old road to Koh Ker, and the drive takes roughly an hour and a half. It is not covered by the Angkor pass, so a separate entry fee applies. It is quieter than Ta Prohm but not empty, since groups arrive late morning. Carvings are fewer and plainer than at Banteay Srei, so come for atmosphere, not for detail. Local children offer to guide you through the stones and expect a tip, and the footing is uneven and slippery.

Beng Mealea is open daily, roughly from early morning to late afternoon, with the ticket booth by the entrance. Confirm current times locally, since hours are set by the site operator and are not those of the Angkor park. Entry needs its own ticket, because the Angkor Pass does not cover it, and nothing inside is FREE to enter without that ticket. The access road, the car park and the stalls outside the gate are FREE to walk. There is no weekly closing day. Collapsed towers, some stair sections and the dense interior are CLOSED or roped off for safety, and boardwalk sections can be shut after heavy rain or while repaired.
