Bennett Place
Historic Site · Durham, North Carolina
A small farmhouse between the lines where, over three meetings in April 1865, Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to William T. Sherman - the last surrender of a major Confederate army, seventeen days after Appomattox and involving a far larger force. The first agreement Sherman signed included political terms that Washington angrily rejected; they had to meet again on 26 April to settle purely military ones. The house burned in 1921 and what stands is a reconstruction.
