Bennington Museum
History Museum · Bennington, Vermont
A regional museum on Main Street in Bennington holding the largest public collection of Grandma Moses paintings anywhere - the farmer's widow from just over the New York line who started painting in her seventies and became, briefly, one of the most famous artists in America. The one-room schoolhouse she attended stands on the site, moved here from Eagle Bridge. Around that the museum keeps the material history of the corner of Vermont it sits in: Bennington pottery, early Vermont furniture and glass, and one of the oldest surviving American flags. It is the sort of museum a town of fifteen thousand should not have.
