Bentonville Battlefield
Battlefield · Four Oaks, North Carolina
The largest battle ever fought in North Carolina, over three days in March 1865, and the last time the western field armies of Sherman and Johnston met. Johnston attacked a wing of Sherman's army as it marched toward Goldsboro, held for three days against growing odds, and withdrew. Five weeks later he surrendered to Sherman at Bennett Place, ninety miles away. The Harper House still stands on the field, used as a field hospital during the fighting.
