Berea

Heritage District · Berea, Kentucky

A small town at the point where the Bluegrass runs into the Appalachian foothills, built around Berea College — founded in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, and still charging no tuition at all, with every student working a job on campus as part of the deal. The craft industries the college set up to give students that work turned the town into the centre of Kentucky woodcraft, weaving and broom-making, and it now calls itself the folk arts and crafts capital of the state.

204 North Broadway, Berea, Kentucky, 40403, United States

The town is open at all hours. The Kentucky Artisan Center keeps long and reliable daily hours. College Square galleries generally run mid-morning to late afternoon, and Old Town studios keep irregular hours and are thinnest on Sundays and Mondays — check at the visitor centre on the day. The Pinnacles trails are open dawn to dusk, free.
