Bergpark Wilhelmshoehe
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Bergpark Wilhelmshoehe (2013); A Baroque And Landscape Park Of About 240 Hectares Whose Water Features Run Downhill By Gravity Alone, From The Hercules Statue To The Neptune Basin · Kassel, Hesse
Bergpark Wilhelmshoehe climbs the hillside west of Kassel: about 240 hectares of baroque and English landscape park begun in 1696 and inscribed by UNESCO in 2013. The inscription is for one idea carried out at absurd scale - water moved entirely by gravity, with no pump anywhere, from reservoirs near the top of the hill down to a basin in front of the palace. The Hercules statue stands on a stone octagon at the summit; below him the baroque Cascades drop step by step, then the water reappears at the Steinhoefer waterfall, runs under a mock Roman aqueduct ending in a broken arch, and finishes as the Grosse Fontaine jet. The display runs on set afternoons roughly May to early October, with an illuminated version on some summer Saturdays; confirm days and times rather than planning a trip around a guess. The park itself is free and open all year. Schloss Wilhelmshoehe holds a serious Old Masters collection including Rembrandts, and Loewenburg on the slope is a folly built deliberately as a half-ruined castle. This is the best single thing in Hesse, and also a real uphill walk.
Schlosspark 1, on the hillside west of Kassel, with the Hercules monument at the top of the cascades, Kassel, Hesse, Germany
The park is free and open all year, with the main carriage drives walkable around the clock. The water features run only on set afternoons, roughly May to early October - traditionally a couple of weekdays plus Sundays and public holidays - with an illuminated version on some summer Saturday evenings. Confirm the current days, the start time and the sequence, because the display begins at the top and moves downhill over roughly an hour. Schloss Wilhelmshoehe and its galleries open daily except Monday, as most German state museums do, with last admission about an hour before closing; wings have been shut for restoration at times, so confirm what is open. Loewenburg and the Hercules monument keep shorter seasons and have both had long closures - confirm either before counting on it.
