Berkeley Plantation
Historic House · Charles City, Virginia
A 1726 Georgian brick house on the James, terraced down to the river in boxwood, and the site of the first official Thanksgiving in America — the Berkeley Hundred settlers landed on 4 December 1619 under a charter requiring the day be kept as one of thanksgiving, two years before Plymouth. It produced a signer of the Declaration and a president, and Taps was written on the lawn in 1862.
12602 Harrison Landing Road, Charles City, Virginia, 23030, United States
Generally open daily with narrowed seasonal hours; the house is guided-only and the grounds are sometimes on a different schedule. Check before travelling. The Virginia Thanksgiving Festival is the first Sunday in November.
