Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest
Arboretum · Clermont, Kentucky
Sixteen thousand acres of forest, glade and managed landscape in the knobs south of Louisville, given to the people of Kentucky in 1929 by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, a German immigrant who arrived with almost nothing and made a fortune distilling bourbon. The Olmsted firm laid out the arboretum end of it. Most visitors come for the Forest Giants — three enormous wooden trolls hidden in the woods by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo — and then discover that the place is far larger and quieter than they expected.
