Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area
State Park · Byron, California
Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area is a small, plain, windy reservoir in Alameda County east of Livermore, beside the California Aqueduct where the South Bay Aqueduct begins. It is a working piece of California's water system as much as a park, set in dry golden grassland hills near Altamont Pass in wide open country with few trees, where wind turbines stand on the ridges nearby - confirm what you can see from the shore. People come for bank and boat fishing (striped bass are the usual draw, trout seasonally - confirm), for the paved path that cyclists and walkers use beside the water, and for the wind, which is steady and strong. There is almost no shade, summers are hot and dry, and swimming is not allowed or is limited - confirm the rule. It is small, quiet and short on services, so bring everything, expect a plain day, plan one to three hours, and keep modest expectations of scenery or amenities.

California State Parks units like this one are generally open from around sunrise to sunset for day use, and posted day-use hours are typically sunrise to sunset - confirm the exact gate or posted times at the entrance, because water-agency rules, fire danger and maintenance can change them. The reservoir is part of the state water system, so some shoreline or access points may be fenced or closed at short notice, and the road in can be affected by wind, dust or roadworks. There is generally no staffed visitor centre, so do not count on anyone to answer questions on site. Check the State Parks page and the weather the morning you go, especially in summer heat and in strong spring wind.
