Beto Carrero World
Theme Park Opened 1991, Often Described As The Largest Theme Park In Latin America By Area · Penha, Santa Catarina
Beto Carrero World is a theme park on the coast of Santa Catarina, opened in 1991 by the showman João Batista Sérgio Murad, known as Beto Carrero, a cowboy-costumed television personality, and it is often described as the largest theme park in Latin America by area. It is Brazil's answer to the big American parks, and families from across the south and south-east plan trips around it. The park mixes roller coasters and a very tall drop tower with licensed areas based on film franchises, a large zoo, and big live shows, including a long-running stunt car show and a Western-themed show in the spirit of its founder. Ride quality is uneven next to the leading American parks, queues on holidays are long, and the site is so large that one day is not enough to see it all. It is close to the beaches of Penha and to Balneário Camboriú, and Navegantes airport is about half an hour away. For a Brazilian family, it is the big park trip; for a foreign visitor, it is a curiosity.

The park does not open every day. In high season, around the January and July school holidays and at Christmas, it opens daily; the rest of the year it follows a calendar of selected days, and in low season it can be shut on several weekdays in a row. Always check the official calendar for your exact date before booking travel, because turning up at a closed gate is the most common way this trip goes wrong. Opening runs from morning to late afternoon, sometimes later on special event nights. The big shows run only at set times, often once or twice a day, so the show timetable shapes the whole visit. Outdoor rides close during lightning storms, which are frequent on summer afternoons. Tickets are sold online and at the gate, with express passes available.
