Betsy Ross House
Historic House · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
A small 1740s courtyard house on Arch Street in Old City, presented as the home of the upholsterer credited with sewing the first Stars and Stripes. The credit is the interesting part: the story rests entirely on family testimony given by her grandson in 1870, ninety-four years after the fact, with no contemporary document supporting it, and historians have been sceptical ever since — and it is not certain Betsy Ross lived in this particular house either. The museum now says all of that out loud, which turns a doubtful shrine into a genuinely good exhibit about how national myths are made.
239 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19106, United States
