Bhimruli Floating Guava Market
Floating Market · Jhalokathi, Barishal
The heart of Barishal's backwater trade: a canal junction at Bhimruli in Jhalokathi where, through the guava season, hundreds of low wooden boats heaped with green fruit jostle hull-to-hull each morning while wholesalers buy from the water. The surrounding sorjan orchard country - guava groves planted on raised beds between canals - is threaded by boatable channels, and the market rolls on at lower intensity year-round with hog plum, vegetables and nursery plants. It is the closest thing Bengal has to the famous floating markets of Southeast Asia, and in peak season it is entirely its own spectacle.
Bhimruli Khal, Kirtipasha Road, Jhalokathi, Barishal, Bangladesh
The market runs mornings year-round, but the guava-season spectacle is July-September, densest roughly 8-11 AM and dissolving by noon - the earlier the better. No tickets or gates; boat hire and purchases in cash at the ghat. Monsoon rain is part of the season and does not stop trading.
