Bialowieza Forest

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Bialowieza Forest (1979, Extended 2014 Across The Belarus Border). The Last Large Remnant Of The Primeval Lowland Forest That Once Covered Europe, And The Home Of The Largest Free Living Herd Of European Bison. The Polish Bialowieza National Park Dates From 1932 · Bialowieza, Podlaskie

Bialowieza is the last large remnant of the primeval lowland forest that once covered much of Europe, shared with Belarus along a border that now shapes every visit. On the Polish side the oldest and most strictly protected part of the national park can only be entered with a licensed guide, which is the point: fallen trunks lie where they fell, and oaks, spruces and hornbeams grow to great size. The forest is the home of the largest free-living herd of European bison. You can see them in the show reserve, which is a managed enclosure, or you can try to spot wild ones, which is a matter of luck and patience. The village has the Palace Park, a museum and the main visitor services, and Hajnowka is the usual rail and bus access. Ticks and mosquitoes make summer uncomfortable. Winter is quiet and cold. The Belarus border is nearby and restricted, so carry ID and keep away from the fence and any closed tracks.

The village, the Palace Park and the walking trails outside the strictly protected zone are open all day, year round, and entry to the park grounds and the village paths is free. The strictly protected area is closed to anyone without a licensed guide, and guided walks run at set times from the visitor centre and need booking ahead in season. The bison show reserve is typically open daily in daylight but may close on some days or in bad weather; confirm before travelling. The nature museum is usually closed on Mondays and has shorter winter hours. The border area has its own restrictions and some roads and tracks near the fence are closed to visitors. Hajnowka buses are fewer on Sundays and in winter. Check opening days before you go, especially off season.
