Bidwell-Sacramento River State Park

State Park · Chico, California

Bidwell-Sacramento River State Park lies along the Sacramento River at the edge of Chico in Butte County, in the northern Central Valley. It is a string of riverside units rather than one park: cottonwood and oak woodland on the banks, sandy bars, gravel shallows, a boat launch and shaded day-use areas, with the Irvine Finch access the busiest of them and the Pine Creek and Indian Fishery units quieter and more wooded. Chico locals use it as the summer escape from valley heat that often passes 100 F: tubing, swimming holes, fishing for salmon and sturgeon in season - confirm rules and licences - and birds along the water. Be honest about the limits: the river is cold, fast and carries hidden snags, summer weekends are loud and crowded with student tubers, poison oak grows thick in the shade, and there is little to do in winter. Bidwell Mansion in Chico is a separate site. Plan half a day, and go early on hot summer weekends before the parking fills.

The park is open daily from about sunrise to sunset, and the individual river units, parking areas and boat launch follow the same daylight schedule - confirm the current times with California State Parks. A day-use fee is commonly charged per vehicle at the busiest access, often in the USD 5-15 range; confirm today's amount and whether a pay station or a person collects it. Some units may close or lose parking when the river floods in winter and spring, and fire danger or smoke can close areas in late summer. Alcohol rules tighten on holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day - confirm. There is no lifeguard service in the normal sense, so check for posted notices at each unit.
