An alpine lake at 6,750 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains, two hours from Los Angeles and the closest thing Southern California has to a year-round mountain town. Two ski areas face each other across the valley in winter; in summer the same slopes run lift-served mountain biking and the lake fills with boats.
