Big Bend Ranch State Park
Subnational Park · Terlingua, Texas
The largest state park in Texas at roughly 300,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert, extinct volcanoes, canyons and mesas along the Rio Grande west of Big Bend National Park — bigger than several national parks and far emptier than any of them. Most of it is reached only on unpaved backcountry roads or on foot, its interior ranger station at Sauceda is a long drive from pavement, and it is one of the darkest places in North America.
Farm to Market Road 170, Terlingua, Texas, 79852, United States
Open year-round; visitor centers at Barton Warnock (east, near Lajitas) and Fort Leaton (west, near Presidio) generally 8 AM - 4:30 PM. Day-use fee applies. BACKCOUNTRY USE REQUIRES A PERMIT arranged in advance. Interior roads need high clearance and close after rain — check conditions before entering.
