Big Cypress National Preserve

Nature Preserve · Ochopee, Florida

Seven hundred and twenty thousand acres of cypress swamp, wet prairie and pine island north of the Everglades, and the first National Preserve ever created — a designation invented in 1974 specifically to protect this land while allowing hunting, oil leases and the traditional use of the Miccosukee and Seminole. It is the core of Florida panther habitat and one of the darkest skies east of the Mississippi.
