Big Sky Resort
Ski Resort · Big Sky, Montana
A ski resort under Lone Peak in the Madison Range, an hour south of Bozeman, with around 5,800 acres of terrain — among the largest in North America and, for a long stretch, marketed on having no lift queues because there is simply more mountain than there are people. It was founded in the early 1970s by Chet Huntley, the NBC newsreader, who grew up in Montana and retired to build it. A tram runs to the 11,166-foot summit of Lone Peak, which is expert terrain in every direction and a view in all of them.

Seasonal in two halves. The winter season runs roughly late November to mid-April; the summer season, with the tram running for sightseers and the bike park open, runs roughly mid-June to late September. May, October and November are largely closed. Lift tickets are markedly cheaper booked online than at the window. The Lone Peak tram carries a supplement on top of a lift ticket and is capacity-limited.
