Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area
National River And Recreation Area · Oneida, Tennessee
125,000 acres of gorge, sandstone arch and free-flowing river on the Cumberland Plateau, straddling the Tennessee-Kentucky line and protected in 1974 after a dam was proposed and then abandoned. The Big South Fork of the Cumberland runs through a canyon several hundred feet deep; above it are more natural arches than anywhere east of Utah, the abandoned coal camp at Blue Heron, a scenic railway down into the gorge, and an International Dark Sky Park designation that makes this one of the darkest places in the eastern United States.
