Big Thicket National Preserve

Biosphere Reserve · Kountze, Texas

The first national preserve ever established in the National Park System, created on 11 October 1974 to protect a piece of Southeast Texas where nine distinct ecosystems collide — southeastern swamp, eastern hardwood forest, midwestern prairie, longleaf pine savanna and dry sandhill, all within a few miles of each other. UNESCO named it an International Biosphere Reserve in 1981. Cacti grow near cypress bayous, and four kinds of carnivorous plant grow wild.
